A Brief History...

The Board of Lady Managers was organized soon after the Home opened in 1895.  This group served the Home faithfully and devotedly in the supervision of all domestic affairs.

The Board was reorganized in 1940 and became the Women's Auxiliary.  This body continued to fulfill its stated purpose by providing material comforts and programs of direct service to Home residents.

In 1986 the name of the organization was changed to "The Auxiliary of the National Lutheran Home," reflecting the increasing participation of men in the work of the Auxiliary.  Now men and women work together to enhance the lives of the Home residents.

Membership has grown from 40 in 1941 to well over 2,000 today.

A Brief History of The Home...

To provide for aged persons whose circumstances may require a comfortable residence with board, clothing, employment, medical attention, and such other comforts as Christian brotherhood may dictate.  (Mission Statement, Certificate of Incorporation, The National Lutheran Home for the Aged, December 13, 1890.)  The Home is a serving agency affiliated with the Metropolitan Washington DC, Virginia and Delaware-Maryland Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Mrs. Sarah Utermehle offered a gift of a 27 acre tract of land at what is now 18th & Douglas Streets NE, to be used for the site of The National Lutheran Home.  Mrs. Utermehle offered the land in response to a request from church leaders at General Synod meetings in 1887 and 1889.  The Home operated on the original tract of land for the following 90 years.

Since 1890, The Home has grown from a small residential home for older adults to a large, full-service, highly-regulated, and highly-specialized comprehensive care facility that serves an increasingly older, larger and more frail population of residents.  In August, 1980, The Home moved to its present location in Rockville, Maryland.  The National Lutheran Home campus consists of a 300-bed main facility and the 129-unit Independent Living Program (ILP) Community.  Click here for a map and directions to the Home.

The National Lutheran Home is Reaching Toward the 21st Century with a Tradition of Care and Service.
